Text tvoří několik slov, povypůjčovaných z anglického překladu bible, ze začátku Matoušova evangelia. Svatého Josefa navštíví ve snu anděl Páně a zvěstuje narození Ježíše. Anděl Ježíše pojmenuje citátem z proroka Izaiáše: „Emmanuel, což znamená Bůh s námi“.

Vše je jakoby zakukleno, zavinuto - zvěstování do snu svatého Josefa, Ježíš do Izaiáše, bezpečí u Boha do jména Emmanuel. I zvuk jména Emmanuel je zvláštně tlumený, jakoby zaoblený. Lze zpívat nejen jeho vokály, ale i souhlásky - skrze tlumítko ze rtů (M---), zubů (N---) a jazyka (L---).

Ve skladbě je ze slova Emmanuel uhněteno tiché nekonečné vyzvánění. (Jen tu a tam, jako vsuvka, vtrhne oslnivé světlo a radost, odstartované slovem „Ejhle!“.) Libozvučné bezpečí je na konci stvrzeno Ježíšovými slovy z příběhu o chození po vodě (latinsky): „nolite timere“, nebojte se. Zkuste si „nolite timere“ vyslovit šeptem na samé špičce jazyka - je to jako nehmotné kroky vodoměrek po hladině.

The text has been excerpted from English translation of Bible, from the beginning of New Testament (Mt 1, 18-25). Angel of the Lord appeared to St. Joseph in a dream and announced the birth of Jesus. The Angel named Jesus, using quotation from the prophet Isaiah: “Emmanuel, which means God with us”.

In the piece, an endless damped ringing is composed from the name Emmanuel, as if big church bells were heard from afar. Just two times, as short insertion, bright glare bursts, jubilating: “Virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, child of the Holy Ghost, and they shall call his name”, and exalting: “God with us!”

Last words of the piece are Latin and were said by Jesus in the story about walking on the sea: “nolite timere”, be not afraid.

Der Text entstammt der englischen Bibelübersetzung, und zwar aus dem Anfang des Neuen Testaments. Der Engel des Herrn erscheint dem Heiligen Joseph im Traum und kündigt ihm die Geburt Jesu an. Der Engel nennt dabei Jesus, indem er den Propheten Jesaja zitiert: „Emmanuel, das meint: Gott mit uns“.

Im Stück wird aus dem Namen Emmanuel ein endloses gedämpftes Geläut komponiert, so wie wenn Kirchenglocken aus der Ferne ertönen. Nur zwei Mal, als kurze Unterbrechung, bricht heller Glanz durch, jubilierend – „Die Jungfrau sei mit dem Kind, und sie bringe einen Sohn hervor, das Kind der Heiligen Geistes, und sie soll ihn bei seinem Namen rufen“ – und exaltierend: „Gott mit uns!“

Die letzten Worte des Stücks sind in Lateinisch. Sie werden Jesus zugeschrieben, als er über das Wasser ging: „nolite timere“ (fürchtet euch nicht).
